Course Overview

This course equips delegates to recognise early signs of common mental health conditions, respond effectively in crisis situations, and provide initial support while guiding individuals towards appropriate professional help. Participants will develop a thorough understanding of the Mental Health First Aider role, including boundaries, safeguarding considerations, and self-care.

  • Mental health and the mental health continuum
  • Risk and protective factors affecting adult mental health
  • Common mental health conditions, including:

o Depression

o Anxiety disorders

o Stress-related conditions

o Psychosis

o Substance misuse

  • Recognising and responding to crisis situations, including:

o Panic attacks

o Self-harm

o Suicidal thoughts and behaviour

o Acute stress reactions

  • The Adult MHFA action plan and how to apply it
  • Active listening and non-judgemental communication skills
  • Boundaries, confidentiality, and safeguarding
  • Signposting to professional, statutory, and community support services
  • Self-care and resilience for Mental Health First Aiders
