Compex Hazardous Areas Combustible Dusts

Course Overview

This course provides training and assessment of competence for electrical and instrument personnel for work on electrical apparatus for use in potentially explosive atmospheres containing combustible dust.

Course Content

The course covers the following key topics:

  • Hazardous area legislation and relevant standards
  • Principles of dust explosion hazards and protection
  • Dust properties and ignition risks
  • Hazardous area classification (Zones 20, 21 and 22)
  • Equipment selection, marking and certification for dust atmospheres
  • Installation requirements for equipment in dust hazardous areas
  • Inspection, testing and maintenance requirements
  • Identification of defects and non-compliant installations
  • Safe working practices in combustible dust environments
  • Competence validation assessment (theory and practical)

Certification

· CompEx Certificate of Competence (valid for 5 years from the date of issue and must be refreshed before expiry) and JTL ID Card.

Documentation Requirements

CompEx Awarding Organisation requirements state that the following documents are required upon booking or at the very latest, 10 days prior to course commencement:

  • CompEx Candidate Registration Form – completed in full, signed, dated etc.
  • Qualification/Certification – one of the following: NVQ III / Apprenticeship Deeds / JIB Card or similar
  • Digital Photograph – Head and Shoulders

Competence Validation Assessment

  • Knowledge Test: Individual Unit Multiple Choice
  • Practical Test: Installation Simulator Practical

Please note: In the event of failing any part of the competence validation tests, a failure letter will be issued, and a resit must be booked. Please note that all results are issued by JTL and are not available to NETA. Certification and results times depend on JTL workloads.

  • A recognised Electrical or Instrument background with practical experience of flammable atmosphere installations
