Middlesbrough dad Dean believes a career in scaffolding is something he should have tried years ago.  But as the 31-year-old says, “better late than never!”.

Put forward by the job centre for the Access to Scaffolding course at NETA Training, he hoped the eight day course would help to get him his site safety cards. As it turns out, Dean walked away with a job offer.

Now working in the scaffolding yard at JMAC Scaffolding, Dean said: “I have a lot of friends who work in scaffolding. This is something I should have done years ago.”

It proved a fantastic opportunity for the dad, who had previously been out of work for two years after taking time out to help care for his youngest son who was born with health difficulties.

Now his son is two and well and truly on the mend, so Dean felt ready to return to work.

He said: “Before I was working away a lot, I wanted something closer to home.  With this job I will be home every night.”

Impressed with the short course, which was funded by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority’s devolved Education Budget, with the aim of helping get people back into work, Dean said: “It has got me straight into work so that has got to be good!”

The Access to Scaffolding course covered a variety of industry qualifications including the CCNSG National Safety Passport, Scaffolding COTS, Scaffolding Appreciation, Scaffolding Mobile Towers, Confined Space (Entry, Awareness and Escape), Mental Health First Aid and Emergency First Aid at Work.
