We recently hosted an E-Girls event at NETA Training which saw 17 female students from St Patrick’s Catholic College in Thornaby come to NETA to get some hands on experience working in the engineering sector.

Strategic business coordinator David Thompson said: “We decided to run this event because nationally and within the Tees Valley the percentage of females choosing a career in engineering is low. NETA wants to encourage females to consider engineering as an option when leaving school.”

When asked about the importance of getting more girls interested in engineering he said: “It is important to show that engineering is not a male dominated area and that girls can succeed and take up important roles in the sector.”

The learners were split into two groups, the first group heading off to our new state-of-the-art Lustrum facility where they were given a tour and learnt about the importance of renewable energy.

Meanwhile the second group of students were split into two groups, one headed off to our Electrical department to learn how to wire up a circuit board whilst the others went off to our Mechanical department to create and make some metal name tags.

David said: “It was great that the learners got the chance to have a go at some practical activities whilst learning about working safely. I felt the events went well with some of the girls saying they may now consider engineering as an option when leaving school.”

The event was a great success, with 100% satisfaction rate and one of the St Patrick’s students said: “I really enjoyed it even though it’s not my type of thing.” Another student said: “I really enjoyed it, it’s made me consider this.”

When asked what the three best things about the event were, comments included:

“We learnt a lot.”

“We got involved in practical activities.”

“I feel more confident about jobs in engineering.”

David said; “We will definitely be hosting the event again as we are passionate about engineering and also the opportunities engineering can give to females in the sector.”
