Forget Celebrity SAS, when it comes to testing their stamina and team building skills, NETA students have proven themselves among the best.

The learners swapped the engineering workshop for a day’s army training with the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery.

With challenges designed to test both their physical and lateral thinking skills, NETA’s mechanical trainer, Steve Carney, said: “They really put the students through their paces.”

Travelling to the Albermarle Barracks in Northumberland, the aim of the event was to give the young engineers the chance to try something different and work as a team.

Trying their hands at pontoon bridge building, puzzle solving and physical training, the group of 26 welding and mechanical learners clearly rose to the challenge.

They even got to apply some of their engineering knowledge.

Steve said: “I don’t think the students knew what to expect but they loved it. By the end of the day they were exhausted.”

Offered an insight into life and careers in the armed forces, he added: “One of the areas that sparked an interest was when they mentioned avionics, including the service and repair of helicopters. It’s a big section of the armed forces that you don’t often tend to think of, but for our students you could see the cogs turning!”
