The aim of the course is to give the delegate the necessary skills to perform slinging operations and the skills required to operate a powered overhead travelling crane safely.

Knowledge of the environment in which the participant performs his/her duties.

The maximum number of persons on this course will be eight.

Training Aids
Use will be made of lecture notes, audio-visual presentation, demonstrations and practice.

The learner will be assessed by means of a written test and a practical assessment.

On successful completion of this course candidates will receive a LEEA certificate.

Clients must make suitable lifting equipment and accessories available for the practical elements of onsite courses.

At the conclusion of this course the delegate will:

    • Have a working knowledge of current legislation on lifting, including HSWA, LOLER & PUWER.

    • Be capable of correctly and safely selecting the correct lifting equipment and lifting accessories including:

        • Chain slings

        • Wire rope slings

        • Synthetic slings

        • Shackles

    • Eye bolts

    • Be able to calculate the weights and centres of gravity of loads, the effect of angles on safe working loads

    • Have a working knowledge of all relevant current legislation relating to lifting and slinging and of general site and workshop safety standards.

Powered Crane Operation

    • Explain the crane working parts

    • Explain the directional travel of the crane

    • Explain the different control systems

    • Pre operational checks

    • Planning the method and route of the load (2 day course only)

    • Explain the use of the correct hand signals

    • Explain the benefits of team working

    • Consider the safety of others

    • Explain safe loading procedures (weight, height, clearance, etc.)


Slinging Methodology

    • The affect of angles on the safe working load

    • The advantages of different slinging methods

    • Classroom scenarios of slinging equipment

    • Identification of bad practices

    • Safety factors in lifting equipment

    • Calculating weights and centres of gravity

    • Accident prevention and precautions to be taken to prevent incidents
